Istanbul: Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus on Thursday urged for the release of imprisoned Ennahda Movement leader and former Tunisian Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi, stressing the need for him to receive full medical care and be released under humane conditions. Kurtulmus expressed his concerns on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, emphasizing his close monitoring of Ghannouchi's situation, whom he regards as "one of the symbolic figures of the struggle for peace, democracy and solidarity."

According to Anadolu Agency, Kurtulmus highlighted that Ghannouchi recently ended his hunger and medication strike following the advice of his medical team. He pointed out that, given Ghannouchi's advanced age and health issues, the gravity of his situation should not be overlooked. Kurtulmus portrayed Ghannouchi as a lifelong advocate for "the future of the Tunisian people, freedom, justice, and democracy," noting his unwavering commitment to his beliefs and democratic pursuits despite enduring pressure, exile, and imprisonment.

Kurtulmus commended Ghannouchi for gaining wide recognition both in Tunisia and internationally due to "his democratic stance during the transition period, his strong intellectual background, and his ideas." He expressed solidarity with the Tunisian leader, reflecting the deep-rooted ties between the Turkish and Tunisian peoples. "I extend my best wishes for his recovery and hope that he regains his health as soon as possible," said Kurtulmus.

Kurtulmus underscored the importance of ensuring that Ghannouchi receives the necessary medical attention, is treated with dignity, and is released. Ghannouchi, who served as the former speaker of the Tunisian parliament dissolved by President Kais Saied, has been imprisoned since his arrest on April 17, 2023. His detention was ordered in connection with remarks attributed to him, facing charges of 'incitement against state security.' Ghannouchi, however, dismisses these charges as politically motivated.
