Rio de Janeiro: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday urged NATO to pay attention to Russia's recent revisions to its nuclear doctrine. "We cannot proclaim that there is a positive aspect to a war in which nuclear weapons are utilized ... NATO officials should deliberate on this step taken by Russia and review it," Erdogan told a press conference at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan emphasized the significance of the situation, referencing the missiles used by Ukraine and noting that these developments are not positive. He described Russia's statement as a precautionary measure against conventional weapons and an act of self-protection. Erdogan reminded that, as a NATO country, Turkey must also take steps to protect itself. The newly revised doctrine indicates that Russia may consider deploying nuclear weapons if subjected to a conventional missile attack supported by a nuclear power. This update, proposed in September, was signed into law on Tuesday, marking the 1,000th day of the war with Ukraine. The revision follows President Joe Biden's decision to allow Ukraine to use US long-range missiles for deep strikes into Russian territory. Erdogan also highlighted Turkey's strategic position as a neighbor to both Ukraine and Russia, stressing the importance of maintaining diplomatic relations with both nations. He lamented the missed "historical opportunity" of the Istanbul agreement, attributing the failure to nearly half a million deaths and a widespread energy and food crisis. Emphasizing the urgency for all parties to take steps toward ending the conflict, Erdogan reiterated Turkey's readiness to mediate between Ukraine and Russia. He expressed hope for a swift resolution and a lasting ceasefire that would secure peace globally. Erdogan also addressed Turkey's consideration of a partnership proposal from the BRICS group, stating that Turkey is actively evaluating the offer and will respond appropriately when it reaches a "certain point." During the G2 0 leaders' summit, Erdogan engaged with various global leaders, including Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, French President Emmanuel Macron, and others, discussing international collaboration and Turkey's diplomatic positions.
