Turkish President Erdogan Celebrates 573rd Anniversary of Istanbul’s Historic Conquest

Istanbul: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday marked the 573rd anniversary of the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul, emphasizing its significance as a historic military victory that also brought peace and renewal to the city. Speaking at the 'From the Conquest of Istanbul to the Conquest of Hearts' event, organized by the Justice and Development (AK) Party's Istanbul provincial branch at the Halic Congress Center, Erdogan paid tribute to those who participated in the 1453 conquest led by Sultan Mehmed II, also known as Fatih Sultan Mehmet.

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan expressed his respect and remembrance for the individuals who took part in the conquest, acknowledging their roles as either martyrs or veterans. He highlighted the conquest not just as a victory that opened and closed an era but as a transformation that brought light to Istanbul, fostering peace and security while promoting tolerance among diverse communities.

Erdogan cited late historian Halil Inalcik, noting that Sultan Mehmed II's efforts transformed Constantinople into a thriving Turkish-Islamic city. He also referenced a prophetic saying related to the city's conquest, praising the commander and the army involved. The president drew a parallel between this historical event and the potential achievements of the Turkish nation, emphasizing the determination and faith exhibited during the conquest.

Erdogan highlighted the strategic feat of transporting Ottoman ships over land into the Golden Horn, reflecting Sultan Mehmed's unwavering determination. He addressed criticisms of Istanbul's historical identity, asserting that such opposition stems from unresolved conflicts with the legacy of the conquest. Erdogan affirmed Trkiye's commitment to preserving Istanbul as the legacy of Fatih Sultan Mehmet and emphasized the inspiration drawn from this event for future endeavors.
