Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has voiced strong disapproval of the United States' decision to permit Ukraine's use of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) against Russia, warning that it may escalate global tensions and prolong the ongoing conflict. Speaking to journalists on his return from the G20 Leaders' Summit in Brazil, Erdogan stated, "First and foremost, we do not consider it a right decision, nor do we approve of it." According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan emphasized the importance of seeking peace through diplomacy rather than military escalation, as the Russia-Ukraine war surpasses 1,000 days since its inception in February 2022. "A step taken by (US President) Mr. (Joe) Biden will be interpreted as a move to fuel the war to ensure it never ends, or even to spread it," he expressed, cautioning that such actions could have far-reaching consequences. Erdogan warned that the escalating tensions might lead to a major global conflict, urging against a careless approach that might e xacerbate the situation. He further criticized the US decision, suggesting it might be perceived as an attempt to intensify the conflict rather than resolve it, potentially prompting a strong response from Russia. Reflecting on the G20 summit, Erdogan highlighted Trkiye's role in advocating for peace and sustainable development. He discussed the summit's focus on humanitarian issues, including hunger and poverty, and reaffirmed Trkiye's commitment to addressing global inequalities. Erdogan noted, "Calls to remove obstacles to delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza and address the dangerous escalation in Lebanon were also recorded at the leaders' level." The Turkish president reiterated his call for global reform, emphasizing the need for a transparent and accountable international system. "The problems in the global system are causing irreparable damage. This broken system must be reformed before it drives our world into great disasters," Erdogan stated. On national security, Erdogan underlined Trkiye's deter mination to combat terrorism. He called on the Syrian regime to take more responsibility in countering terrorism, particularly regarding the PKK and YPG terror groups. Erdogan declared, "We are determined to consign the problem of terrorism to history." Erdogan also discussed Trkiye's comprehensive approach to ending terrorism, which includes combining counter-terrorism strategies with social and economic reforms in disadvantaged regions. He affirmed Trkiye's readiness for the new dynamics following the US withdrawal from Syria, stating, "Our national security comes before everything else." Lastly, Erdogan emphasized the ongoing vigilance against the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), responsible for the 2016 coup attempt, highlighting Trkiye's commitment to maintaining high alert against FETO's infiltration attempts.
