Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has issued a stern warning against any actions that may damage the long-standing ties between Turkey and Iran. He emphasized that no measures should be taken that would "cast a shadow over our thousand-year neighborly and brotherly ties with Iran or wound our nation," following the interception of a missile from Iran directed towards Turkey.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan addressed the nation after a Cabinet meeting, expressing concerns over what he described as "extremely wrong and provocative steps" that continue to strain Turkey's friendship with Iran. He highlighted Turkey's diplomatic efforts since the outbreak of the conflict in Iran on February 28, mentioning that discussions have been held with 16 leaders in pursuit of a resolution.
Erdogan reiterated Turkey's commitment to justice, international law, peace, and stability in Iran, advocating for dialogue as the means to resolve conflicts. He affirmed Turkey's dedication to preventing harm and containing regional instability, despite provocations aimed at igniting conflict.
The Turkish president assured that all Turkish units have been on high alert since the conflict began, with state institutions mobilized to ensure national safety. He emphasized the country's vigilant monitoring of developments through experienced crisis management teams, prioritizing the security of its 86 million citizens.
Erdogan noted that Turkey's three customs gates on the Iranian border remain operational without issues and that airspace is monitored continuously for potential threats. He outlined measures related to civil aviation and maritime trade, including the reduction of flight services to Iran and the closure of airspace over several countries after February 28. Alternative travel routes have been established to minimize disruption for Turkish citizens.
In terms of maritime safety, Erdogan stated that while no Turkish-flagged ships are currently in the conflict region, 15 Turkish-owned vessels and 174 seafarers are under close observation. Alternative routes through neighboring countries are being coordinated to mitigate risks.
Turkey continues to work in conjunction with NATO and other allies to bolster its security, with additional measures being considered. Erdogan also underscored the ongoing monitoring of terrorist activities and reaffirmed Turkey's resolve to confront any threats to its stability or regional peace.
He warned against falling into the "trap of the Zionist massacre network" and reiterated Turkey's objective of establishing a terror-free region. Erdogan concluded by highlighting Turkey's robust financial system, with Central Bank reserves at approximately $200 billion, providing the capacity to absorb potential risks.
