Ankara: The Turkish Zero Waste Foundation is set to introduce a new global zero-waste framework aimed at benefiting the world, during the 31st United Nations climate change conference (COP31), which Turkey is scheduled to host and chair next year. This initiative is part of Turkey's ongoing efforts in climate diplomacy, as the nation seeks to play a pivotal role in advancing waste reduction and preventing food waste, crucial issues impacting the global future.
According to Anadolu Agency, Samed Agirbas, the head of the Zero Waste Foundation, emphasized Turkey's strategic role in securing the hosting and presidency of COP31. This was achieved following negotiations at COP30, held in November in Brazil, under a shared arrangement with Australia. Established in 2023 under the auspices of Turkish first lady Emine Erdogan, who serves as its honorary president, the foundation is dedicated to promoting the Zero Waste Project and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
Agirbas highlighted that since 2022, Turkey has been actively engaging in climate diplomacy through coordinated efforts by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, along with other ministries. These efforts culminated in Turkey's successful participation in COP30 in Brazil, where discussions were held with representatives from various organizations and stakeholders.
In December 2022, Turkey led a significant initiative at the United Nations General Assembly, resulting in the adoption of a resolution proclaiming March 30 as the International Day of Zero Waste, co-sponsored by 105 countries. Agirbas described this achievement as a success that originated locally in Turkey and expanded onto the international stage.
Further emphasizing the non-political nature of the zero-waste initiative, Agirbas noted Turkey's commitment to involving its population, particularly youth and children, in the COP31 process. Additionally, the Zero Waste Foundation's website remains open to receiving new ideas and project proposals from the public.
The upcoming COP31, scheduled for November 9-20, 2026, will be primarily held in the Turkish Riviera resort of Antalya, with the leaders' summit in Istanbul. Nearly 200 countries are expected to attend, focusing on the implementation of the Paris Agreement, including updated emission reduction targets, adaptation measures, climate finance, and carbon market rules.
