Two Fans Banned for Unfurling Palestinian Flag During Basketball Match in France

Nanterre: Two fans have been banned from attending basketball matches for one year after unfurling a Palestinian flag during a match in France.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Nanterre Court issued the ruling on Friday against two men, aged 19 and 21, who displayed the flag during a game between Nanterre and Hapoel Holon.

The court imposed a fine of £500 ($518) on the two individuals and prohibited them from entering any competition area for a year, citing their actions as potentially influential to the course of the sporting event. However, the court chose to dismiss charges of violence, which had been alleged against them for supposed involvement in altercations with a policeman and an Israeli fan.

The incident occurred on December 18, 2024, when the two young fans entered the competition area during the match between Nanterre and Israel’s Hapoel Holon basketball teams. Video footage circulated on social media showed one of the fans, who had landed on the field with the Palestinian flag, being beaten by Israeli supporters.
