Hanoi: Typhoon Bualoi has left at least 29 people dead and 22 missing in Vietnam while costing the country over $300 million in property damage, officials said Wednesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, a total of 139 people were injured during the storm, as reported by the Department of Dike Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, and cited by the Viet Nam News daily. The typhoon wreaked havoc by causing dike breaches, flooding, and landslides in numerous areas.
In the aftermath of the storm, 91 houses were either collapsed or swept away across northern and central localities. Nearly 145,000 houses suffered damage, and over 20,000 were submerged due to the typhoon's impact. The storm also inflicted damage on more than 1,076 schools.
The agricultural sector was heavily affected, with around 44,000 hectares of cultivated fields and aquacultures destroyed. Additionally, more than 180,000 livestock and poultry were killed, and over 60,000 trees were uprooted.
Initial estimates suggest that the economic damage caused by the typhoon in Vietnam exceeds 8 trillion Vietnamese dong, equivalent to over $303 million. The storm also disrupted power supply to nearly 2.7 million households, although electricity has since been restored to 1.4 million of them.
