Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) called on Saturday for de-escalation in Yemen, urging Yemenis to exercise restraint and solve their differences through dialogue amid unrest in the country's south.
According to Anadolu Agency, the UAE Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of prioritizing dialogue over confrontation and resolving differences among Yemenis through understanding and consensus on sustainable political solutions. The ministry underscored the UAE's commitment to the security, stability, and prosperity of Yemen and the region, advocating for a rational approach that prioritizes the interests of the country and its people.
The UAE's call for de-escalation comes at a time when tensions in Yemen have heightened. The Saudi-backed government forces recently regained several key military positions in the eastern province of Hadhramaut from fighters of the Southern Transitional Council (STC). The STC, which claims political and economic marginalization of southern regions, calls for secession, a stance rejected by Yemeni authorities who affirm their commitment to the country's unity.
On Friday, the UAE announced the completion of the return of its forces from Yemen, following a disagreement with Saudi Arabia over Abu Dhabi's role in the country. Earlier in the week, Saudi Arabia accused the UAE of encouraging STC forces to conduct military operations along the kingdom's southern border in Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra, an accusation that the UAE denied.
The UAE Foreign Ministry reiterated that de-escalation and constructive dialogue are essential for overcoming current challenges and achieving lasting stability in Yemen and the region. The ministry expressed hope that such efforts would fulfill the aspirations of the Yemeni people for security and prosperity.
