London:Swedish climate scholar Andreas Malm has been prohibited from entering the United Kingdom prior to his scheduled appearance at a London conference. Immigration officials cited concerns that his presence "may not be considered to be conducive to the public good."
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Malm was slated to speak at a conference organized by Tribune magazine alongside Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action—a group that is banned under UK law. The conference was intended to address the implications of Palestine Action's proscription and align with a Supreme Court challenge regarding the group's designation.
Malm, who serves as an associate professor of human ecology at Lund University in Sweden, was informed of the entry ban before his travel to the UK. He condemned the decision as "scandalous" and called on the government to reverse it, highlighting his long history of visiting the UK for academic purposes.
Author Sally Rooney expressed disapproval of the decision, describing it as "a sad and frightening act of cultural self-harm." The UK Home Office opted not to comment on individual cases related to this matter.
