London: The United Kingdom will deploy drones, Typhoon fighter jets, and the Royal Navy warship HMS Dragon as part of a future multinational mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz, the UK Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday. This strategic move is aimed at ensuring the safety of a crucial global trade route where approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply transits.
According to Anadolu Agency, the UK contribution to this mission will include autonomous mine-hunting systems, counter-drone capabilities, and mine-clearance specialists. These efforts are bolstered by a new funding allocation of 115 million pounds ($152 million). The package will also feature the Royal Navy’s modular ‘Beehive’ system, which is equipped with autonomous Kraken drone boats designed to detect, track, and respond to threats.
The HMS Dragon, equipped with its advanced Sea Viper air defense system, is already en route to the Middle East after undergoing additional preparations and training. It is expected to play a critical role in potential future operations within the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, British Typhoon fighter jets stationed in the region will be on standby to conduct air patrols over the strategic waterway.
Defense Secretary John Healey emphasized the UK’s leadership role in this mission, stating that the new funding and deployment of advanced military assets demonstrate a strong and clear commitment. He also highlighted that the multinational mission, conducted alongside allies, will be defensive, independent, and credible.
The UK Defense Ministry clarified that the operation would be activated ‘when conditions allow,’ with the primary objective of restoring confidence in commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This mission is critical for maintaining the flow of global trade and ensuring the security of energy supplies. The UK currently maintains a military presence of over 1,000 personnel across the region, including counter-drone teams and fast-jet squadrons, underscoring its commitment to regional stability.
