UK Diesel Prices Hit Record Amid Middle East Tensions

London:The UK's diesel supply remains strong despite record-high prices and global concerns over fuel availability, according to Transport Minister Keir Mather. On Friday, Mather assured that the country's diesel supply is "robust" and "resilient."

According to Anadolu Agency, the average diesel price in the UK reached £2 per liter, approximately 2.7, on Wednesday. This surge is linked to increased pressure on global energy markets due to tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

Mather emphasized the diversity of the UK's diesel supply and the resilience built into the system. He mentioned ongoing collaboration with the US, the International Energy Agency, and European partners to maintain diesel flow. Furthermore, he highlighted the government's decision to keep fuel duty frozen, assuring that the public should not be concerned about shortages.

The RAC motoring organization reported that diesel prices hit a record 199.33 pence per liter earlier this week, surpassing the previous high of 199.09 pence established in June 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Since the onset of the US-Israel conflict with Iran at the end of February, diesel prices have increased by 59 pence per liter, nearly 40%.

More than half of the UK's diesel is imported, with 31% sourced from the US. In response to the price surge, G7 leaders have agreed to work "in a coordinated manner" to alleviate diesel prices. Plans include enhancing production flexibility, releasing up to 100 million barrels from strategic reserves within four months, and avoiding energy restrictions among partner countries.

These developments come after US President Donald Trump indicated the possibility of asking European nations to release diesel reserves while considering restrictions on US fuel exports.
