London:The UK labor market in 2026 exhibited a broadly flat trend, marked by a slight rise in the employment rate and a minor decline in the unemployment rate in the latest quarter.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that the number of payrolled employees fell between August 2025 and August 2026, with early estimates for September indicating little change over the month.
The unemployment rate for those aged 16 and over was 4.7% for the June to August period, showing a 0.1 percentage point decrease both annually and quarterly. Conversely, the UK employment rate for individuals reached 75.3% during the same timeframe, reflecting a 0.2 percentage point increase in both annual and quarterly terms.
The economic inactivity rate for people aged 16 to 64 stood at 20.9%, which is down 0.2 percentage points year-on-year and 0.1 percentage points in the latest quarter. The number of vacancies saw its largest decline since the start of the year, with smaller firms attributing this to increased labor costs.
While regular wage growth remained stable, total pay fell to its lowest level in nearly six years. Estimates revealed a decrease of 111,000 payrolled employees in the UK from August 2025 to August 2026. Early estimates for September suggested the number of payrolled employees reached 30.3 million.
