London:The British government has confirmed that UK students will be able to participate in the Erasmus student exchange scheme starting January 1, 2027. This announcement marks a significant development in the UK's educational engagements with the European Union.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, a deal for the UK to rejoin Erasmus, the EU's student exchange program, was previously reported by multiple media outlets in 2025, indicating that the UK would re-enter the program in January 2027.
British Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer announced in parliament that interested young people could apply from November to study, train, or gain work experience in the EU. He emphasized that the Erasmus scheme is not limited to university students but includes educational institutions of various kinds, encouraging lawmakers to collaborate with the British Council to engage their institutions.
The Erasmus program was discontinued in the UK in December 2020, following the government's post-Brexit trade deal with the EU. The decision came after the 2016 Brexit referendum, where a majority of Britons voted for the UK's withdrawal from the EU, which officially took effect on January 31, 2020.
