Nairobi: One person was killed, and 15 others were injured in Russia's overnight strikes on Kyiv, Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported on Sunday. The strikes ignited fires at civilian infrastructure, nonresidential buildings, and open areas, prompting emergency crews to clear debris and address the damage, according to authorities using the US social media platform Facebook.
According to Anadolu Agency, in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, a drone hit a passenger train, injuring one individual, as stated by regional Governor Ivan Fedorov on Telegram. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of executing one of its 'largest ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv,' firing over 40 missiles, primarily targeting the capital, alongside 120 attack drones.
Over the past week, Russia has employed approximately 1,450 attack drones, more than 1,640 guided aerial bombs, and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine, President Zelenskyy noted. He emphasized the importance of protection against ballistic missiles as a top priority, expressing gratitude to partners for their support on the US social media company X. Zelenskyy also stressed the necessity of maintaining pressure on Russia while continuing work on anti-ballistic capabilities.
Ukraine's Air Force claimed to have intercepted 18 missiles and 108 drones during the overnight assault. Ukraine's General Staff reported striking two Russian tankers in the Black Sea, a floating crane in the Sea of Azov, a Buk air defense system in the Russian-controlled part of the Zaporizhzhia region, and a road bridge in the Russian-controlled part of the Donetsk region during overnight operations. The military stated that these targets were used to bolster Russia's military logistics and fuel supplies.
In a separate development, Moscow confirmed a 'massive strike' on Kyiv. A fire erupted at an industrial site in Russia's northern Stavropol region following overnight strikes, Governor Vladimir Vladimirov announced on Telegram. He reassured that the site was distant from residential areas, posing no threat to nearby buildings.
Russia's Defense Ministry corroborated the attack on Kyiv, stating that its forces launched a "massive" assault on military-industrial facilities, logistics centers in Ukraine's capital and surrounding region, and infrastructure at the Yuzhny port in the Odesa region, allegedly used for military cargo storage and delivery. The ministry claimed that the strikes targeted defense manufacturers in Kyiv, including Radioniks, Spetsoboronmash/Artem, Meridian, and Oakline, which purportedly produce or supply components for missiles, drones, and other military systems. It also claimed its forces hit the Kyiv Innovation Terminal and a logistics center in Tarasovka responsible for assembling and distributing drone components.
According to the ministry, the targets supported Ukraine's drone, missile, and electronic warfare programs. Additionally, the ministry asserted that its forces intercepted and destroyed 140 Ukrainian drones during overnight strikes across the country, annexed Crimea, and the waters of the Azov and Black seas. However, these claims could not be independently verified due to the ongoing conflict.
