Ukraine Condemns Romanian Politician’s Comments on Territorial Integrity

Kyiv: Ukraine on Thursday slammed remarks from Romanian politician Calin Georgescu on the country’s territorial integrity. In an interview with Romanian journalist Ion Cristoiu late Wednesday, Georgescu called Ukraine an ‘invented state’ and suggested the division of Ukrainian territories among neighboring European countries, including Romania.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi, in a statement published by the ministry, condemned Georgescu’s comments, highlighting them as a severe affront to Ukraine and its citizens. Tykhyi emphasized that statements challenging Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are ‘categorically unacceptable.’

Tykhyi further criticized Georgescu’s attempts to portray himself as an independent politician, suggesting that his remarks echoed Russian propaganda, indicating a possible dependence on Moscow’s influence. Despite this controversy, Ukraine remains confident that Romania’s best interests align with fostering peace and prosperity in the region.

Tykhyi also expressed Ukraine’s gratitude for the support received from Romania and its people since the conflict’s onset in February 2022. This backing has been crucial for Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions and military engagements.

Calin Georgescu, known for his Eurosceptic and far-right stance, previously ran as an independent candidate in Romania’s presidential elections last November. He secured nearly 23% of the vote in the first round. However, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the presidential run-off and the first-round results following revelations of electoral interference by a “state actor.” This decision was influenced by declassified secret service documents from the Supreme Council of National Defense.
