Cherkasy: Ukraine announced the loss of an F-16 fighter jet and its pilot due to an overnight Russian airstrike, which also injured six individuals in the central Cherkasy region. The incident highlights the ongoing escalation in hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ukraine's Air Force confirmed that the pilot was killed while attempting to repel the attack. During the airstrike, Ukraine claimed its air defenses successfully intercepted 211 out of 477 drones and 38 out of 60 missiles launched by Russia. The pilot reportedly engaged and neutralized seven Russian air targets before the fighter jet was damaged.

The Air Force statement detailed that the pilot managed to steer the damaged aircraft away from populated areas but was unable to eject in time. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the heroism of Ukrainian aviation and called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the pilot's death.

Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine's position that Russia's capacity to launch significant strikes constitutes an ongoing threat, urging for increased international pressure on Moscow to halt the conflict. He stressed the importance of enhancing Ukraine's air defense capabilities, pointing to American systems as potential acquisitions.

In a related development, Cherkasy Governor Ihor Taburets reported on Telegram that six people sustained injuries in the city of Smila due to the same airstrike. The attack caused damage to three nine-story buildings and a local college. Efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage, and an operational headquarters has been set up to manage the situation.

The Russian Defense Ministry later issued a statement asserting that the strikes targeted Ukraine's military-industrial facilities and oil refineries, claiming that all objectives were successfully hit.
