Kyiv: Ukraine's parliament voted Wednesday to approve the country's budget for 2026, with nearly a third of outlays going to defense and security as the over 3 1/2-year Russia-Ukraine war continues. The budget bill was passed by the Verkhovna Rada with the support of 257 lawmakers, according to its website.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to all parliamentarians who supported the budget measure. He emphasized the importance of the budget as a signal of Ukraine's resilience and stable financial provision for the upcoming year's needs, highlighting defense, social programs, and restoration opportunities post-Russian strikes as clear priorities. Zelenskyy also noted ongoing efforts with international partners to secure financial support.

Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko stated that the budget allocates funds for defense, social support, and economic development, with a primary focus on strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities. The statement revealed that 27.2% of the country's GDP will be dedicated to defense and security, including weapon and military equipment acquisitions, while approximately $49.2 billion in external support will be required for the year ahead. Expected resources are anticipated from the World Bank, EU, United Kingdom, IMF, and G7 countries.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko reiterated on Telegram that the budget's main priorities are defense, security, and social stability. She noted that Ukraine plans to allocate 2.8 trillion Ukrainian hryvnias ($66.4 billion) to the military, accounting for almost 60% of all expenditures. The budget bill awaits President Zelenskyy's signature to become law.
