Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed on Saturday that a large majority of Hungarians support Ukraine’s entry into the European Union, criticizing Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s opposition through “controlled surveys.”
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy told journalists in Kyiv that an open survey conducted by Orban’s opposition showed that 70% of Hungarians are in favor of Ukraine joining the EU. He criticized Orban’s own survey, which allegedly depicted a contrary viewpoint, suggesting it was manipulated to show opposition to Ukraine’s EU membership bid.
Zelenskyy attributed Orban’s stance to domestic political maneuvering, expressing concern over Hungary’s actions. He stated, “Just don’t drag us into your elections. That’s what he (Victor Orban) is doing-by blocking us in the EU. In the end, this strategy won’t be a winning one.”
The Ukrainian president further warned that Orban’s actions could have detrimental effects on the European Union by undermining the principle of sovereignty. “We’re communicating with our other partners and signaling that what he’s doing is dangerous for the European Union. He may be opposed, but taking steps to block our accession-he has no right to do that,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
Zelenskyy confirmed that Kyiv is on track to meet the EU membership benchmarks and expects to be technically ready by July 1. He expressed confidence in receiving support from all EU members, except Hungary. He mentioned ongoing but unproductive talks between Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna and Hungarian officials.
