Damascus: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday met with his Syrian counterpart, Ahmad al-Sharaa, in Damascus. The discussions centered on enhancing security and development opportunities for both Ukrainian and Syrian societies.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy took to US social media company X to share that the two leaders agreed to collaborate on providing "greater" security and more opportunities for development. Zelenskyy also discussed the regional situation and the circumstances surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict with al-Sharaa. He highlighted a mutual interest in exchanging military and security experience and expressed gratitude for the support and respect shown towards the Ukrainian people.

Zelenskyy further elaborated on Ukraine's role as a reliable food supplier and explored joint opportunities to bolster regional food security. He acknowledged the energy and infrastructure challenges facing Syria and expressed readiness to work together to expand opportunities for both nations and their citizens.

The Syrian news agency SANA reported that talks between al-Sharaa and Zelenskyy also focused on enhancing bilateral relations and expanding economic cooperation. The leaders emphasized the importance of securing food supply routes to support stability amid ongoing international tensions.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan was present during the discussions, as noted by the same source. This meeting follows a joint statement signed by Syria and Ukraine last September in New York, aimed at restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
