Homs: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday 'unequivocally' condemned a deadly attack on a mosque in Syria's central city of Homs, as Damascus seeks to stabilize security conditions nationwide.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres emphasized that "attacks against civilians and places of worship are unacceptable," and called for those responsible to be identified and held accountable. His spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, released a statement noting the Secretary-General's strong condemnation.

Guterres also acknowledged the reaction from Syrian authorities, who have denounced the attack and reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism. "The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the families of those killed and expresses his sympathy to all those injured, wishing them a prompt and full recovery," Dujarric stated.

The incident resulted in at least eight fatalities and left 18 others injured at the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque on Al-Khodari Street in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood of Homs. This attack comes as Syria's new administration aims to enhance security conditions and address threats from elements of the former regime.

Bashar al-Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia, effectively ending the Baath Party's control since 1963. A new transitional administration, headed by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, was established in January to guide the country through its current challenges.
