Gaza: UN officials believe the killing of journalists in the Gaza Strip is probably deliberate, marking the enclave as one of the deadliest places in the world for reporters, stated Ajith Sunghay, representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territories. Sunghay addressed these concerns while responding to inquiries from Anadolu on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sunghay highlighted the critical role journalists play in covering events in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and Palestinian territories. He reported that "over 210 Palestinian journalists have been killed since October 7, 2023," as per the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate. Sunghay asserted that many of these killings are suspected to be intentional, potentially constituting war crimes that demand thorough investigation and accountability.

Sunghay described Gaza as "one of the most deadly places on earth for journalists," underscoring the grave risks reporters face, including numerous injuries that remain undocumented. He emphasized the responsibility of third-party countries under the Geneva Convention to enforce a ceasefire, which would aid in protecting both civilians and journalists in the region.

He further expressed solidarity with the families and friends of journalists who have been killed or injured while performing their duties globally. Sunghay praised the bravery of national journalists who risk their lives to report the truth from areas where international journalists cannot reach, such as Gaza.
