He expressed concern over these developments, noting reports of civilian casualties, displaced families, and damaged infrastructure.

Yemen has been embroiled in conflict for over a decade, Grundberg noted, cautioning that a resurgence of large-scale fighting would exacerbate the plight of civilians and impede progress towards a political resolution. He emphasized the necessity of establishing a credible political path to address the core political, security, and economic issues fueling the conflict.

Grundberg underscored the importance of utilizing existing communication channels, such as the UN-backed Military Coordination Committee, to avert further escalation. He urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, safeguarding civilians and infrastructure.

In his continued efforts to address the tensions, Grundberg will persist in engaging directly with the parties to maintain dialogue. He also called on regional and international actors to leverage their influence to de-escalate tensions and facilitate a return to political negotiations.

Recently, renewed fighting between government forces and the Houthis has erupted in various Yemeni regions, particularly in Taiz, Al-Jawf, and Al-Bayda, accompanied by airstrikes targeting Houthi sites. Since July, a series of mutual attacks have disrupted the relative calm established by a UN-brokered truce in April 2022. The Houthis have maintained control over the capital Sanaa and several cities since September 2014, with the internationally recognized government and allied forces holding sway over large parts of southern, eastern, and western Yemen.
