Istanbul (aa): The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) carried out field operations Monday to remove war remnants and unexploded ordnance in several areas of Quneitra province in southwestern Syria, Al-Ikhbariya TV reported. UNDOF was established under a UN Security Council resolution in 1974 to monitor the disengagement agreement in Syria's Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since 1967.

According to Anadolu Agency, UNDOF forces are conducting operations to eliminate war remnants and unexploded ordnance in various areas of the Quneitra countryside, aiming to mitigate risks faced by civilians. The broadcaster highlighted the significance of these efforts in reducing potential threats.

Syrian authorities have periodically reported casualties caused by explosions of war remnants left behind during the conflict initiated by the former regime of Bashar al-Assad against opponents during the revolution from 2011 to 2024. Landmine Monitor data indicates that unexploded ordnance in Syria has resulted in over 13,000 casualties since 2011.

Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on December 8, 2024, marking the end of the Baath Party's rule that began in 1963. A transitional administration, led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, was established in January 2025.
