Tripoli:The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has pledged its commitment to collaborate with the newly elected leadership of Libya's House of Representatives to advance the political roadmap aimed at holding elections.
According to Anadolu Agency, this statement follows the recent election of Al-Salihin Abdul Nabi Al-Obaidi as the new speaker of the House, replacing Aguila Saleh. The election took place after an initial session attended by 102 members, where 98 voted to amend the House's internal regulations and establish a rotating presidency with a maximum term of 12 months.
In a subsequent session involving 111 members, the new leadership was elected. UNSMIL affirmed its ongoing efforts with the legislative body to unify state institutions, implement urgent reforms, and hold elections as stipulated by the agreement reached by the mini-dialogue committee in August.
Last week, the 4+4 mini-dialogue committee, consisting of representatives from the Government of National Unity and the eastern Libya-based military leadership, signed an agreement at UNSMIL's headquarters in Tripoli to organize elections within 24 months. This committee has been engaged in UN-sponsored talks since April 2026 to break the political deadlock and facilitate the UN roadmap, particularly focusing on elections and the unification of executive authority.
Libyans are hopeful that the anticipated elections will resolve ongoing political and armed conflicts, ultimately ending the series of transitional phases that have persisted since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
