Ankara: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has issued a call for "immediate de-escalation" due to "increased reports of a continued military build-up in and around Tripoli." UNSMIL has strongly advised all involved parties to abstain from using force, especially in densely populated areas, and to avoid any actions or rhetoric that could incite further conflict or lead to renewed clashes.

According to Anadolu Agency, UNSMIL has emphasized the importance of upholding responsibilities under international law to protect civilian lives and property, warning that those responsible for attacks on civilians will face accountability. The mission continues to work towards de-escalating the situation and encourages all parties to engage in good faith dialogue to achieve peace.

UNSMIL has called for the rapid implementation of security arrangements developed by the Truce and Security and Military Arrangements Committees, which it continues to support. The mission has also demanded the withdrawal of forces recently deployed in Tripoli without delay, highlighting dialogue over violence as the only sustainable path to lasting peace and stability in both Tripoli and Libya as a whole.

The situation escalated in May when clashes erupted between government forces and militia groups in Tripoli. Government forces dismantled the Stability Support Apparatus, a significant militia group, and a ceasefire was reached with the Rada, another influential militia in the capital. Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh stated on July 7 that his Government of National Unity is determined to eliminate all militia groups in the capital.
