Damascus: UN officials have issued a call for immediate international investment in Syria, highlighting the return of more than 1.6 million refugees to the war-torn country. The officials warned that without adequate services, many intending to return may ultimately decide against it.

According to Anadolu Agency, Alexander de Croo, administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), emphasized the importance of providing essential services such as housing, government services, and employment opportunities. His comments came during a virtual briefing from Syria, where he discussed the challenges faced by Syrians returning after a 14-year conflict initiated by the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

De Croo highlighted the critical need for these services to ensure that those who wish to return are not deterred by the lack of infrastructure and support. He noted the dramatic circumstances under which many left Syria and the significant effort required to rebuild their lives.

UN aid chief Tom Fletcher further elaborated on the humanitarian needs, noting that nearly 16 million people in Syria are still in need of assistance. Despite progress in recent months, Fletcher stressed the importance of accelerating humanitarian efforts, including mine clearance, to support the country's recovery.

Fletcher also pointed to the potential for Syria to transition from an importer of problems to a source of solutions and stability. He urged the international community to keep Syria insulated from the broader regional crisis, particularly in light of the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.
