Gaza:The ceasefire in Gaza has not succeeded in providing stability or adequate humanitarian relief, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He called on all parties to fully implement their obligations to achieve lasting peace.
According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres highlighted that the previous year's ceasefire offered some relief but failed to deliver security, adequate humanitarian assistance, or a credible path to recovery and peace. He made these remarks in a statement marking three years since the conflict escalation began.
Guterres urged all sides to advance to the next stages of the truce based on the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict. He emphasized the need for the ceasefire to become permanent, for humanitarian assistance to be allowed at scale, and for international law to be respected.
Acknowledging the origins of the conflict, Guterres condemned the attacks on October 7, 2023, where Palestinian armed groups killed over 1,200 people in Israel and abducted 251 hostages. He pointed out that the subsequent military operations resulted in significant suffering for Palestinians in Gaza, including widespread deaths, displacement, and catastrophic destruction.
Guterres called for an immediate end to civilian suffering in Gaza and stressed the need for the international community to establish a credible political path ensuring that Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side with equal rights and dignity.
Since October 2023, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 74,000 Palestinians and injuries to over 175,000 others, as per Palestinian figures. Approximately 90% of Gaza's infrastructure has been destroyed. Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025, the Israeli army has killed 1,454 Palestinians and injured 5,090 others, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
