UN Warns of Grave Risk to Children After Drone Strike on Sudanese Displacement Camp

Al sunut: The UN warned Wednesday that children in Sudan remain at grave risk as violence continues to be “unchecked” after at least 15 children were reportedly killed and 10 others wounded in a drone strike Monday on a displacement camp in Al Sunut in West Kordofan.

According to Anadolu Agency, desperate families in Sudan are seeking shelter in displacement camps after fleeing hunger and violence. Their protection has become a significant concern for international organizations. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell emphasized the urgent need for protection in a statement, pointing out the alarming situation faced by children in the region.

Russell highlighted that the distressing scenarios unfolding in the Kordofan region mirror those previously seen in Darfur, with children suffering fatalities, injuries, displacement, and a lack of access to essential services. This situation underscores a broader pattern of violence and neglect in Sudan.

UNICEF has strongly urged the Sudanese government and all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the protection of civilians, especially children. The organization is calling for an immediate halt to attacks on civilian infrastructure, including displacement sites, and the facilitation of safe, sustained, and unhindered humanitarian access to address the rapidly escalating needs.
