Gaza: The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) announced it has opened 130 temporary educational centers across Gaza, facilitating in-person learning for approximately 47,000 children.

According to Anadolu Agency, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated the importance of education for children, noting that it offers hope, aids in healing, and helps them reconnect with their childhoods. He highlighted that education is essential for overcoming the severe trauma the children have experienced.

Lazzarini noted that over 270,000 boys and girls are enrolled in the UNRWA education program, where they receive basic education in subjects such as Arabic, English, mathematics, and science. He emphasized UNRWA's role as the largest provider of emergency learning and psychosocial support in Gaza.

Despite the progress made with the reopening of learning centers, Lazzarini acknowledged the challenges that remain. He stressed the necessity of continuing efforts to bring more children into educational programs, pointing out the urgency of the situation to prevent a lost generation of Palestinian children.

The recent conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 48,500 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children, and nearly 112,000 injuries since October 2023. The conflict, which left significant destruction, was paused following a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement effective January 19.

In a related development, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its actions in the enclave.
