Ursula von der Leyen Supports Ukraine’s Call for Ceasefire on Energy and Food Attacks

Accra:European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed her support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's call for a ceasefire to protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia.

According to Anadolu Agency, von der Leyen shared her support on the social media platform X after a discussion with Zelenskyy. She emphasized the importance of the ceasefire and mentioned that the European Union's upcoming discussions would include Ukraine's funding needs.

She also highlighted the EU's plans to provide additional funding for drones and missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. This announcement followed a statement by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire concerning attacks on each other's energy infrastructure.

Zelenskyy, reacting to Trump's announcement, expressed surprise at the news. He stated that if Russia is in agreement for an energy ceasefire, Ukraine would also agree, and he requested clarification on when the ceasefire would commence.

French President Emmanuel Macron also supported the call for an energy ceasefire, although he noted that Russia continues to reject the proposal and has intensified its strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. Macron reiterated France's commitment to support Ukraine.
