Geneva: Four US Air Force C-17 transport aircraft have been dispatched to Europe in preparation for a possible visit by Vice President JD Vance to Geneva, where a prospective agreement between the US and Iran might be signed, Axios reported.
According to Anadolu Agency, the military flights are linked to a potential signing ceremony that could occur in the coming days, contingent upon the success of ongoing efforts to finalize the agreement. President Donald Trump announced earlier that Washington and Tehran had reached a "great settlement," with the potential for an agreement to be signed as soon as this weekend.
The proposed memorandum of understanding aims to extend the current ceasefire for 60 days and initiate negotiations on a broader deal addressing Iran's nuclear program. The draft agreement includes provisions for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without transit fees and aims to restore shipping volumes to pre-war levels within 30 days.
In exchange, Iran would agree not to pursue nuclear weapons and address concerns regarding its enriched uranium stockpile. Any specific measures related to Tehran's nuclear program would be part of a separate, more detailed agreement, as reported.
Axios noted that the deal would offer Iran phased sanctions relief linked to its compliance with commitments, including temporary waivers permitting oil exports. The tentative agreement was reportedly reached following discussions between Qatari mediator Ali Al-Thawadi, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Iran's Foreign Ministry has stated that Tehran has not yet made a final decision on the proposed accord, with the agreement still pending final approval from Iran's top leadership. If signed, the deal is expected to be known as the "Islamabad Agreement," highlighting the mediation efforts of Qatar and Pakistan.
Additionally, Trump praised Trkiye for its assistance in reaching the anticipated deal, mentioning a conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and commending him for his efforts in facilitating the agreement.
