Sanaa: US warplanes carried out a wave of airstrikes on Yemen's capital late Sunday in the latest round of near-daily attacks since the Trump administration announced a major military offensive against the Houthi group in March. The strikes targeted specific areas within the city, marking an escalation in the ongoing conflict.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah TV channel reported on X that the airstrikes targeted the Faj Attan area in Ma'een District of Sanaa in two raids, followed by an attack on a sanitation project in the Asr area of the district. Additional strikes reportedly hit the Farwa neighborhood of Sanaa, as well as a market in Sanaa's Shu'ub District. Details regarding potential casualties or the extent of material damage have yet to emerge, as the US has not commented on the report.
Earlier on Sunday, the Houthi group claimed that the US was preparing for a ground operation in Yemen, warning that such a move could further destabilize the situation. This follows Thursday's US airstrikes on the Houthi-controlled Ras Issa port in Al Hudaydah province, which reportedly resulted in 80 fatalities and 150 injuries, including port workers, staff, and paramedics. Washington stated that the strikes on Ras Issa were aimed at destroying a fuel platform to economically weaken the Houthis.
Since March 15, the US has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Yemen, resulting in the deaths of 205 civilians and injuries to 406, mostly women and children, according to official Houthi data that does not include losses among their forces. US President Donald Trump previously stated that he had ordered 'decisive and powerful military action' against the Houthi group and later threatened to 'completely annihilate them.'
The Houthis have been targeting ships passing through strategic waterways such as the Red and Arabian seas, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden since November 2023 in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where at least 51,000 people have been killed in an Israeli assault. The group had paused attacks after a ceasefire in Gaza was declared in January between Israel and Hamas but resumed them following the renewal of Israeli airstrikes on the enclave last month.
