New York:US Ambassador to Ankara Tom Barrack emphasized the importance of defense cooperation between Trkiye and the United States, stating that resolving issues surrounding Trkiye's purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system will require time. Speaking at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Barrack noted the two NATO allies are working through congressional mandates related to the S-400 issue.

According to Anadolu Agency, Barrack acknowledged the efforts by the US Congress to manage the complexities of the situation, which is governed by both the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) and the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). He highlighted a recent $100 million transaction involving Boeing commercial jets as an example of economic collaboration between the two countries.

Barrack also commented on the strong relationship between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, noting their mutual respect and effective communication. He mentioned that most major issues between the countries are managed by ministers and military chiefs, which keeps bilateral relations in good stead.

During informal discussions between Trump and Erdogan, Barrack observed a strong personal chemistry, despite cultural differences, which he said helps in maintaining a productive relationship. He praised Trkiye as a steadfast ally to the US, especially during times of regional tensions.

Barrack highlighted Trkiye's strategic geographical position, acting as a bridge between various regions, including the GCC, Europe, the Caucasus, and the Balkans, which contributes to its pivotal role in international relations.

Regarding dialogue with Iran, Barrack expressed optimism, stating that continued discussions represent a positive step forward. He noted that US special envoy Steve Witkoff found the ongoing talks encouraging and emphasized the necessity of maintaining engagement to pursue peace and tolerance.
