US and Saudi Arabia Finalize Historic $142 Billion Defense Deal

Riyadh: US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed a strategic economic partnership document between the two countries on Tuesday. The agreement is set to bolster defense and energy cooperation.

According to Anadolu Agency, the leaders signed a series of bilateral agreements during a US-Saudi summit at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh. These agreements span fields such as energy and defense, with a significant emphasis on enhancing the capabilities of the Saudi Armed Forces through future defense initiatives.

The agreements include a letter of intent between the defense ministries of both nations, focusing on the development and modernization of Saudi military forces. This involves cooperation on ammunition, training, support services, maintenance, and the modernization of land and air systems for the Ministry of National Guard.

The White House highlighted the magnitude of the deal, describing it as the "largest defense sales agreement in history," valued at nearly $142 billion. The agreement will provide Saudi Arabia with advanced warfighting equipment and services from multiple US defense firms.

In addition to defense, the two countries also signed a memorandum of cooperation in the mining and mineral resources sector and a memorandum of understanding for collaboration in the energy sector. These initiatives are expected to further strengthen the economic ties between the US and Saudi Arabia.

President Trump's visit to Riyadh marked the beginning of his first overseas trip since taking office in January. His itinerary also includes visits to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, reflecting a broader strategy to strengthen US ties in the region.
