Geneva: The first day of high-level trade talks between the United States and China concluded in Geneva, Switzerland, as both nations aim to address escalating trade tensions. Discussions, which lasted at least eight hours, are set to resume on Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the meeting started at 10 am local time (0800 GMT) and included a break for lunch before ending around 8:00 pm. No official statements were released immediately following the talks, and specifics about the discussions remain undisclosed.

The US delegation was led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, while China's team was headed by Vice Premier He Lifeng. The talks are part of ongoing efforts to ease tensions after the US imposed tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese imports earlier this year, prompting Beijing to retaliate with duties of up to 125% on certain American goods.

Ahead of the talks, US President Donald Trump suggested that an 80% tariff on Chinese goods 'seems right.' The White House reiterated its support for Trump's trade team, emphasizing their goal to secure 'the best deal possible for America.'
