Washington:US Representative Ilhan Omar has committed to opposing what she describes as intimidation efforts by President Donald Trump's administration, as the midterm elections approach. Omar, representing Minnesota, expressed her determination in a video address on Tuesday, in which she thanked her supporters.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Omar emphasized that neither she nor her colleagues would be silenced or intimidated by the administration's actions. She accused administration officials of being "running scared" as the elections draw near, underscoring her belief in the power of public solidarity as a driving force to challenge the Trump administration.
Omar pledged to campaign vigorously with voters to ensure Democratic majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. She also intends to hold the executive branch accountable, particularly following President Trump's recent comments suggesting she could face imprisonment related to a federal immigration inquiry.
Earlier this month, federal agents conducted a search of Omar's residence as part of an investigation into alleged false statements on government documents and possible conspiracy. The search resulted in the seizure of laptops, mobile phones, notebooks, and her passport. The inquiry is focused on whether Omar or her late father provided incorrect age information when she became a US citizen in 2000.
Omar, who made history in 2019 as the first Somali American lawmaker in the US House of Representatives, has denied any wrongdoing. She clarified that she arrived in the United States at the age of 12 in 1995 and became a naturalized citizen at 17.
