Ankara: The Trump administration announced that it will not provide US government funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, while simultaneously releasing $600 million in congressionally appropriated funding for the global vaccine group. According to Anadolu Agency, the State Department and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a joint statement reiterating that US government funding will not be directed to WHO via Gavi. This announcement follows directives from US President Donald Trump, who last year tasked HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. and Secretary of State Marco Rubio with negotiating reforms with Gavi. These negotiations aimed to secure renewed US support contingent on commitments to advance "vaccine safety" and align with "Gold Standard Science." As a result of these commitments, the State Department confirmed the immediate release of the $600 million allocated for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. Gavi has agreed to collaborate with its board and partner countries to transition from mercury-containing vaccines, such as meningococcal A, pentavalent DTP-Hib-HepB, pneumococcal, and hepatitis B vaccines, to mercury-free alternatives.
