Washington: US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is currently under scrutiny for involving his wife, Jennifer Hegseth, in high-level military meetings with foreign officials where confidential matters were addressed. The situation has drawn significant attention, especially following an earlier controversy involving the inadvertent sharing of sensitive information with a reporter.
According to Anadolu Agency, Jennifer Hegseth, who previously worked as a producer at Fox News and is not employed by the Defense Department, was present at a March 6 meeting at the Pentagon. The meeting involved UK Defense Secretary John Healy and Adm. Tony Radakin, the UK's Chief of Defense Staff, and discussions focused on Washington's recent suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine and future collaboration between the allies.
Her presence occurred shortly after the US officially halted intelligence support to Kyiv, a move that raised diplomatic concerns across the transatlantic alliance. This intelligence support was eventually reinstated. The Pentagon has not confirmed whether Jennifer Hegseth holds a security clearance, which is typically required for spouses of senior officials but not automatically granted.
A defense official explained that attendee lists for such meetings are generally restricted to individuals with security clearances. Jennifer Hegseth also accompanied her husband to a recent NATO meeting in Brussels, where discussions about support for Ukraine were on the agenda. While some foreign attendees were reportedly unaware of her identity, others expressed surprise but proceeded with the discussions.
In addition to his wife's involvement, Defense Secretary Hegseth's brother, Philip, has also been noted for joining him on recent official trips. Earlier this week, Hegseth faced criticism for inadvertently sharing details of a military strike on Houthi militants via a commercial messaging app, where a reporter was mistakenly included in the conversation, gaining access to sensitive information involving US and Israeli intelligence sources.
This incident has fueled concerns regarding security laxity under the Trump administration, prompting some allies to reconsider the extent of information they share due to these security apprehensions.
