Addis Ababa:The US Embassy in Addis Ababa has issued a warning to Americans about reports of possible long-range attacks targeting Ethiopian military installations, advising them to exercise caution and adhere to local authorities' guidance.
According to Anadolu Agency, the embassy communicated this warning through a social media post on the US platform X by the State Department. It specifically advised against travel to the Amhara Region, including the town of Lalibela, as well as the Tigray and Afar Regions.
US citizens currently in these regions have been advised to leave if it is safe or to shelter in place until the security situation improves. The embassy did not disclose details about the potential attacks, such as specific targets, timing, or the types of weapons that might be involved.
Americans in the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant, closely monitor developments, and follow any instructions from local authorities. Additionally, they should stay updated via media outlets and remain in contact with airlines regarding possible changes to flight schedules.
The regions mentioned in the advisory—Amhara, Tigray, and Afar—have experienced security issues in recent years, with Amhara facing violence involving armed groups and government forces, and Tigray dealing with ongoing security and humanitarian challenges. The Afar Region has had security concerns related to regional conflicts and instability.
The embassy's notice did not clarify whether any attacks had already occurred or if further incidents were anticipated. The advisory highlights the ongoing security challenges in Ethiopia and the need for Americans to take precautions while authorities continue to assess the situation.
