Doha: US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack commended Syria's progress over the past year, following the ouster of the Bashar Assad regime in December 2024. Barrack highlighted the country's significant achievements during a panel discussion at the Doha Forum in Qatar's capital.

According to Anadolu Agency - English, Barrack described Syria's accomplishments as 'epic' and 'heroic' and emphasized the importance of supporting Syria's new administration under President Ahmad al-Sharaa. The government has been working on political and economic reforms, fostering social cohesion, and enhancing cooperation with international and regional partners.

Barrack urged for support that aligns with Syrian aspirations and cautioned against imposing 'Western expectations' which might hinder Syria's path to self-determined stability. He critiqued historical Western interventions in the Middle East, suggesting they often resulted in unsuccessful outcomes and regional paralysis.

Addressing the ongoing situation on the Syrian-Israeli border, Barrack noted that achieving stability is a gradual process requiring incremental progress. He also praised Trkiye's and Qatar's pivotal roles in mediating a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which took effect on October 10. The ceasefire ended a two-year conflict in the region that resulted in significant casualties and injuries.
