Washington: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Wednesday that the ongoing federal government shutdown, now in its 15th day, is beginning to impact the economy significantly, with costs climbing to $15 billion each day.

According to Anadolu Agency, Bessent made these remarks during CNBC's Invest In America forum in Washington, DC, when questioned about the economic repercussions of the shutdown. He stated, "I've seen figures that are starting to hurt the economy, maybe up to $15 billion a day."

Bessent also acknowledged that President Donald Trump's policies had initiated an investment surge across the nation. However, he noted that the government shutdown is the only factor slowing the economic momentum. He urged for the government to be reopened and placed the blame on Democrats for the current shutdown situation.

Despite the financial strain, Bessent highlighted that the Pentagon is still able to disburse salaries to US servicemen, indicating some areas of government remain operational. He also mentioned the potential negative impact of the shutdown on the labor market, citing a drop in confidence among robust small businesses.

The shutdown began on October 1 due to Congress's inability to approve a temporary budget bill before the start of the new fiscal year.
