Washington: US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that over 200 migrants, who were transferred to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador by US immigration agents, should remain incarcerated for life. She made these remarks during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) event in Washington.

According to Anadolu Agency, in March, former President Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. This legislation provides extensive powers to expel individuals during periods of war or when facing hostile threats. As a result, over 200 Venezuelan nationals were removed from the United States, with some being sent to the El Salvador prison, based on court records.

Secretary Noem expressed confidence in the decision to imprison these individuals, asserting that the intelligence gathered from ICE, the State Department, and other agencies supports their continued detention. She emphasized, "They should stay there for the rest of their lives."

Her statements follow a recent indication from the Supreme Court that, although the Alien Enemies Act permits deportation of detainees, these individuals must be allowed to contest their removal in court.
