Washington: A US House of Representatives committee has called for the Secretary of State to submit a report on efforts to support a democratic transition in Nicaragua within 90 days of the enactment of an appropriations bill.

According to Anadolu Agency, the House Appropriations Committee specified in its report on fiscal year 2027 appropriations that the report should address the restoration of fundamental freedoms, independent institutions, human rights, and religious liberty in Nicaragua. The document also requests that the State Department outline actions to reduce Nicaragua's dependence on China and detail the conditions necessary for 'credible, free, and fair elections.'

The committee emphasized that continued repression, authoritarian consolidation, and 'sham electoral processes' should not replace democratic rule. It expressed support for ongoing funding for democracy programs in Nicaragua. This measure arises amid escalating tensions between Washington and Managua following constitutional reforms approved by Nicaragua's National Assembly, which extend the presidential term and allow authorities to bar certain individuals from elections.

The reforms, if enacted, would further consolidate power for President Ortega and his wife and co-president, Rosario Murillo. US Senator Marco Rubio has separately urged international partners to halt 'business as usual' with the Ortega-Murillo government, indicating that Washington intends to work through the Organization of American States to amplify pressure on Managua. This move signifies Washington's increased efforts to support a democratic transition in Nicaragua.
