Washington:The United States has enacted a ban on approximately $1 billion worth of imports from Canada, including alcoholic beverages, dairy products, and motor vehicles. This measure, initiated by an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, came into effect on Tuesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, the ban represents a new phase in the ongoing trade disputes between the US and Canada, despite the extensive $880 billion annual trade volume shared by the two nations. The action is a response to what the US perceives as Canada's discriminatory treatment of critical American exports.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated that the restrictions are a direct consequence of these discriminatory practices. The list of banned Canadian goods specifically includes certain alcoholic beverages, dairy products, and motor vehicles.
Earlier, in July, the US administration declared a 50% tariff on selected Canadian goods due to alleged discriminatory actions by Ottawa against American products, with these tariffs being implemented on August 22.
In retaliation, Canada imposed its own tariffs of 15%, 25%, or 50% on certain US products, which took effect on September 8.
