Washington: The number of Americans filing first-time unemployment claims increased by 13,000 last week, reaching a total of 225,000, as reported by the US Labor Department on Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, this figure surpassed market expectations, which had predicted 214,000 claims for last week. The previous week's claims were also revised downward to 212,000. Additionally, the four-week moving average rose by 6,500 to 214,750, compared to the prior week's revised average of 208,250.

In contrast, the US economy showed resilience by adding 115,000 jobs in April, significantly higher than the anticipated gain of 65,000. Despite these fluctuations in jobless claims and employment additions, the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.3% in April, consistent with March's figures.
