US-Israeli Military Actions Escalate Regional Tensions: UN Chief Warns

Ankara: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday addressed the escalating tensions in the Middle East, highlighting the impact of US and Israeli military actions against Iran. He stated that these actions have affected multiple countries and are pushing the region toward a critical breaking point.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres made these comments during the Ataturk International Peace Prize ceremony held at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan awarded him the prestigious accolade. During his speech, Guterres emphasized the need for dialogue and de-escalation as the only viable solutions, urging all involved parties to cease hostilities, protect civilians under international law, and return to the negotiation table.

The UN chief praised Turkey for its role in supporting refugees, noting the country's response during an unprecedented displacement crisis. He commended Turkey for opening its doors to millions fleeing violence and persecution, underscoring the nation's humanitarian efforts.

Guterres began his speech by expressing gratitude to President Erdogan, the Turkish government, and the Turkish people. He remarked that the award comes at a time characterized by global suffering, conflicts, and deepening geopolitical divisions. Despite the declining trust in global cooperation, he reaffirmed that peace is more than just a noble vision, calling it a rallying cry for action.

In accepting the award, Guterres dedicated it to UN staff worldwide who work tirelessly for sustainable development and human rights, particularly honoring those who lost their lives in humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, including in Gaza. He also invoked the legacy of Turkey's founder, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, noting that the principle 'Peace at home, peace in the world' embodies the spirit of the UN Charter.

Guterres further acknowledged Turkey's leadership in mediating the Black Sea Grain Initiative and its efforts to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages in Gaza. Addressing global conflicts, he warned of rising geopolitical tensions, increasing military expenditures, and the frequent violation of international law, with civilians bearing the brunt of these conflicts. He highlighted the Middle East crisis as a particularly tragic example, stressing the urgent need for a renewed commitment to peace.
