Beijing: China has strongly criticized the recent joint military operations by the United States and Israel targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, stating that these actions undermine the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
According to Anadolu Agency, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning addressed reporters in Beijing, emphasizing that the armed attacks on Iran's nuclear sites are in violation of the UN Charter, international law, and the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) statute. Mao highlighted that these strikes not only damage the authority of the NPT but also threaten regional peace, security, and stability.
Mao reiterated China's firm opposition to the attacks and advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue and diplomacy. She expressed China's concern over the negative impact of the military actions undertaken by the US and Israel.
The US and Israel began their military offensive last month, targeting key Iranian nuclear facilities located in Ardakan, Bushehr, and Khondab. The IAEA confirmed severe damage to the heavy water production plant in Khondab, rendering it non-operational.
Mao also mentioned a recent meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar in Beijing. The two nations plan to increase coordination on Iran and other regional issues. Pakistan is currently mediating efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East by facilitating communication between Washington and Tehran.
China expressed regret over the damages to Iranian cultural relics and historical sites during the conflict. Mao urged all involved parties, particularly the US and Israel, to cease military operations immediately and engage in dialogue to end the war.
Additionally, Mao confirmed that three Chinese vessels had safely navigated the Strait of Hormuz, acknowledging the efforts of "relevant parties" and advocating for a peaceful ceasefire and stability in the Persian Gulf. The strait has been under Iran's control since March, following the onset of US-Israeli attacks which have resulted in significant casualties, including the death of Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran has responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and other regional countries hosting US military forces. The conflict has claimed the lives of at least 13 US servicemen and left dozens wounded.
