US Issues Travel Advisory Warning Against Travel to Iraq Due to Security Risks

Istanbul:The United States has issued a travel advisory warning its citizens against traveling to Iraq, citing significant security risks such as armed conflict, terrorism, and kidnapping.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the advisory was updated on Friday and released by the US Embassy in Iraq on Saturday, maintaining the same warning level and risk indicators as before. It emphasizes that the US government's ability to provide emergency services to American citizens in Iraq is severely restricted due to these security threats.

The advisory highlights that Iran-backed Houthis have launched attacks on Saudi Arabia, targeting civilian airports and critical infrastructure, leading to civilian casualties and major travel disruptions. It warns that the hostilities could escalate rapidly beyond the immediate area.

The State Department expressed concerns that the Iraqi government cannot ensure the safety of US citizens amid sudden outbreaks of violence and armed conflict. US government personnel in Iraq are required to follow strict security protocols, and travel to the country necessitates special authorization. The advisory indicates that further restrictions may be introduced as security conditions change.

Additionally, the advisory specifically warns of terrorism and kidnapping threats, mentioning that ISIS (Daesh) and Iran-aligned armed groups actively encourage and carry out attacks against US interests in Iraq. It notes recent attacks involving improvised explosive devices, projectiles, and drones across various regions, including major urban areas.

The advisory also details that recent attack targets have included locations such as hotels, universities, energy infrastructure, airports, and other sites perceived as linked to the United States, including diplomatic facilities.

Regarding civil aviation, the State Department refers to restrictions and warnings from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) concerning flights in or near Iraqi airspace due to aviation safety risks.

This updated advisory comes in the context of escalating regional tensions and reports of potential US-Israeli military actions against Iran, although the timing remains uncertain with upcoming elections in both Israel and the United States.
