Abu dhabi: US Central Command: The US military has officially announced its plan to initiate 'Project Freedom,' a strategic operation aimed at ensuring the safe passage of merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This initiative, endorsed by President Donald Trump, is set to commence on May 4, with US Central Command (CENTCOM) taking a proactive role in safeguarding commercial shipping routes.
According to Anadolu Agency, CENTCOM has detailed that the operation will involve a comprehensive array of resources, including guided-missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and a deployment of 15,000 service members. This concerted effort underscores the United States' commitment to maintaining regional security and supporting the global economy, as emphasized by CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper.
Despite the assurance of support, the Axios news site has reported that the initiative may not entail direct escort of commercial ships by US Navy vessels. Citing two American officials, the report suggests that while US Navy ships will remain 'in the vicinity' to counter potential threats from Iran's military, the primary focus will be on providing guidance for the safest maritime routes, avoiding areas mined by the Iranian military.
President Trump, addressing the matter on his Truth Social platform, described the operation as a 'humanitarian gesture.' He highlighted the plight of neutral foreign vessels stranded in the strait, lacking essential supplies. The initiative, therefore, aims to safely escort these vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz, starting Monday morning, Middle East time.
The decision to launch 'Project Freedom' comes amidst ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have significantly impacted global markets. This strategic move seeks to stabilize the transit of energy, fertilizer, and other critical industrial commodities, which have experienced sharp price increases over recent months.
